I have been wanting to redo the kitchen at the lake for quite some time...
I didn't want to spend a lot of money, so I decided that I would simply paint the 80's oak cabinets.
I really wanted white cabinets, but I worried about the bright white appliances and the creamy white countertops.
Which should I match to? Either way one would end up looking dirty...
I started by taking an oak board and trying several different greys to see which one worked best (because I had grey tile to match to) I chose French Linen.
What I didn't do, was try the paints with wax and then see which one matched the best...
big mistake.
Wax drastically changes the color of the paint. Even clear wax does.
So we started here with ugly cabinets, ugly appliances.
So when we finished painting & waxing the cabinets ....
I was not thrilled with the look of flooring & appliances with the cabinets.
Ugh.
I was just not happy.
No way I could afford new appliances, and besides these appliances worked just fine.
So we tried changing the light bulbs. One bulb made the cabinets look green.
Another made the cabinets look blue.
Neither of which I wanted. I wanted grey. A pretty, neutral grey. Ugh.
We changed the hardware, which helped a little...
Then Black Friday came along....
Lowes had an amazing deal.
For the price of a single refrigerator we were able to get a full suite.
Hubby agreed, since he knew I was not happy, and I assured him we could sell our perfectly good set on craigslist and pay for our new set....which we did!
Here is our finished kitchen!
I like it much more and it fits perfectly with the color story of the rest of the house!
