pretty poppies!

Next in the line up in the perennial  bed are the pretty poppies.  Their petals are paper thin and their insides are amazing!
They range in color from brilliant orange red to a soft coral.

Its a nice bright shot of color in the all purple split rail garden...

purple rain....

The first things up in my garden is everything purple...all shades of purple...
First is the hesperis or dames rocket.  This is the pretty purple flowers you see along the road side in many shades of purple.  Dig some up and add to your garden.
It reseeds and is so light and airy and pretty!
Next is the bachelor button or coneflower.
Its pretty spidery flowers will keep on blooming if you deadhead them.
Then there is the hyacinth.
This one was given to us years ago from my husbands grandfather.
And pretty columbine.  Another one that reseeds.
This one comes in many colors, but my purple one always blooms first.
My irises have just begun to bloom.  This one is a little soggy due to all the rain...sigh.
It's supposed to dry out this weekend (hopefully) and they will look better.
Again, only my purple ones have started to bloom.
And even in the herb garden, the only thing blooming is the chives.
This is the only time in the spring and summer that it is a symphony of one color.  I love it!

fun advertising signs

We went to a sale yesterday and I found these really cool vintage waxed advertisements.
I think they would be really cool framed and put in a kitchen.
The graphics are really fun, bright and cheerful!  They made me smile :)

many thanks to all who came to the sale!

Whew!  What a great sale we had!
We got to see so many familiar faces and one of the best things is we got to meet so many new friends that I have blogged with.
We LOVE when we get to meet you lovely bloggers!
It is so fun to actually meet people and put faces to the names!
Thank you for taking the time to hunt me down!
Thank you to all who came and visited us!  We hope you enjoyed your visit!
We had a great time (even though hubby had to pull a few of you out with the tractor, thanks to ole Mother Nature! )
But for the most part she kept her rain away and we were thankful!
Thank you especially to my wonderful family and friends who came and helped.
We couldn't do these sales without you and we love you!
Special thanks to Dave and Karen who came all the way from Connecticut to help us.
We had a blast with all you guys!
I'll share some more pictures this week...
AND A HAPPY MOTHERS DAY TO YOU ALL!

there is only one good thing about all this rain....

...that is this bountiful crop of asparagus!!
For those of you who have never had fresh asparagus from the garden - you need to find a friend who has some!
There is nothing like it in the world!
I told my friends that, and they didn't believe me until they tried it!  Now they are believers!
For that matter any veggie or fruit, fresh from the garden, is so very, very different from anything you get at the grocery.
I am reading a book now called Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver.
In this book, she explains that if everyone in the United States ate just 1 meal a week (any meal) locally,  it would save this country 1.1 million barrels (thats barrels, not gallons) of fuel a week!
I don't know about you, but it just cost me $69 to fill my van up today at the pump.
$4.19 a gallon is absurd!!
So what I don't grow, I am going to seek out locally.  It not only tastes better, it's better for you, and is good for the environment and reduces our dependency on fuel!  Thats a win- win!

But as it stands this week...that's the ONLY good thing about all this rain!
I apologize in advance to those of you who might get stuck parking this Friday and Saturday!  Please remember, we can't control Mother Nature!!
Hope to see you this weekend!!  We will have fun rain or shine!!

framed artwork

A couple weeks ago I showed you some of my framed dictionary artwork.
Here are a few of them grouped together.
I think they look really great when they are grouped together.
